Yahaira's 100% Natural Pregnancy

I am so excited! My “nephew” Gerald’s wife Yahaira is expecting soon. I am so proud of Yahaira for the homework she’s doing to make sure she has a natural childbirth and a healthier baby. She’s been getting adjusted while pregnant. (Yes, pregnant women can definitely get adjusted. I use a pregnancy cushion so they can still lie face down until about month 6 or 7. After that I adjust them in side-lying or face-up position.)

Chiropractic care helps with pregnancy back pain, and avoiding painkillers during pregnancy is wise. And if you’ve had chronic spinal problems before conceiving, getting adjusted during pregnancy is actually a great idea. The body is putting out the hormone Relaxin, making it easier to get a comfortable adjustment, even in areas that have been stiff for a long time.

Can chiropractic care make childbirth easier? I say “yes!” I believe that if your sacral and pelvic areas are moving freely and in alignment before labor begins, childbirth is going to be easier and less painful. Do I have research to back up my assertion? No, I only have my several decades of experience, common sense, and a handful of letters from happy mothers post-partum.

I also strongly suggest getting adjusted within a few weeks after childbirth. Many women tell me their chronic back pain began after the birth of a child. My advice is to get adjusted and properly re-aligned before your pelvic ligaments start to tighten up again. Finally, I often hear from new mothers that the site of the epidural injection, if they had one, can become a source of chronic pain. Again, that pain can sometimes easily be resolved by a trip to the chiropractor.

Adjusting pregnant mothers has always been a joy for me, but to be able to work with Yahaira is a special joy and a blessing.

Just a postscript here: Yahaira went into labor on the morning of August 8. Less than six hours later, she was holding her baby daughter in her arms. Indeed, the delivery was 100% natural–no pills or epidurals. Our new mother is proud of that, and rightly so!
