Hand Washing: Keep it Simple, use Soap
When did hand washing become a dangerous activity? When chemical companies started telling us we needed triclosan, an antibacterial agent. Triclosan doesn’t seem to do a better job than regular old soap, but there are a number of hazards associated with its use. It is a hormone disruptor, so it supresses testosterone and thyroid hormone levels in the body. It promotes the development of super-strains of bacteria. It slows muscle function, which could be a big problem for people with heart disease or muscle disorders such as fibromyalgia. Here is a link to a well-written article on triclosan. Kaiser hospitals have banned its use, and you should, too.
Check out Unearth Malee, a local soap maker based in Claremont, for healthy alternatives. You can also find many brands of household cleansers rated for safety by Environmental Working Group here.
If you’ve already been exposed to chemicals such as triclosan, consider doing a supervised cleanse such as the Standard Process 21-Day Purification program. People who finish the program report better sleep, improved concentration, and more energy.
